MINOR OUTER HOOK THROW  (Ko Soto Gake)
This throw is an aggressive leg hook and is used in all forms of combat sports.  This version of the throw features a strong leg grab as well.  Thanks to Kevin Green and Kirk Quinones for demonstrating this technique.

Kevin (right) has Kirk in a cross grip.  Kevin's goal is to shoot behind Kirk and hook his far leg to throw him.

Kevin moves behind Kirk and uses his right leg to read far and hook Kirk's right leg .  Kevin uses his left hand to reach in front and across Kirk and grab immediately above Kirk's right knee as shown.  Kevin's right hand is grabbing Kirk's left shoulder at the jacket.

Kevin hooks (with his right foot) at Kirk's right ankle as Kevin drivs hard into Kirk.  This action will throw Kirk.

Here's the another view of this throw showing how Kevin is hooking Kirk's ankle as he throws him.

  JUJI GATAME, THE CROSS-BODY ARMLOCK
A favorite armlock af many Welcome Mat athletes is juji gatame, the cross-body armlock.  Here are som photos of the many variations and applications Welcome Mat athletes have used for many years and continue to use with great success.

Bill West does the Cross-body Armlock (Juji Gatame) on Eric Millsap.  This armlock is used extensively in all forms of grappling and is one of the most popular armlocks used in Russian sambo.

Steve Scott doing juji gatame on Jake Phillips.  We have made intensive studies on this armlock at Welcome Mat and our athletes have used it in judo, sambo, sport jujitsu situations as well as adapted it for law enforcement use.  Steve Scott and Bill West wrote SECRETS OF THE CROSS BODY ARMLOCK in 2005 (shown at right). It's one of the most extensive presentations of this armlock in print anywhere in the world with almost 40 different ways to get an opponent into the armlock.  You can order it from us.  See our Products page for information.

Sharon Vendenberg and Kirt Yoder drill on the spinning juji gatame during a workout.  Effective drill training is necessary to make this armlock an instinctive behavior and athletes at Welcome Mat have done thousands of repetitions in drills and open training.

The cross-body armlock has been used by Welcome Mat athletes in every level of sport combat from local judo and sambo meets to national and world championships.  The photo at right (and then below) shows Derrick Darling using the spinning juji gatame on his opponent in a judo match.  Derrick Darling rolled his opponent over and won the match with his juji gatame.

Becky Scott  (photo at left)uses juji gatame to get the win over an opponent in a judo meet in the 1980s.

The photo below right shows Derrick Darling finishing his juji gatame on his opponent.

ROLLING JUJI GATAME WHEN YOUR OPPONENT IS FLAT ON HIS FRONT

Knowing how, and being able, to apply juji gatame from about any position is important.  Sometimes, your opponent may flatten out and lay on his face in the hope that you will go away, much like an ostrich buries his head in the sand when threatened.  We call this the "chicken" positon because an opponent often does this instead of engage you in a ground fight and hopes that the referee will save him.  This application of juji gatame isn't well-known, but it is effective.  There are a lot of set ups for a lot of different moves when your opponent is in the chicken positon, but let's take a look at this rolling juji gatame from this position.

MAJOR OUTER REAP (O Soto Gari) FOR "No Gi"

Kyle Meredith (right) has an overhook tie up with Alan Johnson.  Kyle sucks Alan's arm in with his left arm as shown and leans into Alan to break his balance.

Kyle steps in with his left foot, making sure to bend his left knee and look forward at his foot as he steps in.  this breaks Alan's balance and puts Kyle in position to start the throw.

Kyle uses his right leg to hook Alan's right leg as shown.  Kyle drives forward hard and is really breaking Alan's balance (to his rear) at this point.

Kyle throws Alan by using his right leg to hook hard and drive alan flat onto his back.  Kyle can follow up with groundwork at this point.
